I don’t know. There should be more stuff here. Jay was a good guy who affected many lives in a positive way. I remember him laughing, a lot. I remember us getting pulled over by a Kalamazoo cop on our way to a party. Jay was driving. The cop had him do the drunk test walk, heel-to-toe, on the sidewalk. Madelyn screeched, “He can’t do that — he ain’t no dancer!” Hilarious and true. But the cop apparently decided that Jay was a better bet to drive than Madelyn, so he let us all go. We got to the party and back okay. Another time, there was a young black kid pacing weirdly at the side of the road. We offered him a ride and realized that he was in some kind of emotional crisis. He was tearful and thankful for any kind of help. Jay immediately knew where to take him. He had a friend who ran a crisis center downtown. There, we dropped the kid off, and he got immediate help. Thanks to Jay. In closing, Jay was a really good guy. Honest, funny, trustworthy, and competent — the kind of guy who made an excellent friend and roommate. Let the world always know this about my friend.

Jay was my good friend all my years at WMU. We shared an apartment on Westnedge, many beers, and lots of laughs. A Kalamazoo kid, he had an enormous circle of friends and acquaintances around town. Everyone seemed to know him, everyone seemed to like him. And no wonder — Jay was one of the kindest, gentlest, and most hilarious people on the planet. He had an unforgettable laugh that went from a maniacal and slightly evil chuckle one minute, to an open-mouthed explosion the next. A heart so big, and too much joy to contain. I owe him a lot. He will be missed by all who knew him.
