Obituary of Alexander Sercye
Alexander Sercye Sr. was born on March 30, 1922 to John Sercye and Nellie (King) Sercye in Indianola, MS. To this union 19 children were born.
Alexander confessed Christ at the age of 13 and was baptized. He moved to Chicago and joined the Mount Sinai M.B. Church under the leadership of the late Rev. J.W. Richardson, where he worked until the brothers organized New Mount Sinai M.B. Church under the leadership of Rev. Elijah Sercye. Alexander was ordained on July 3, 1966 at New Mount Sinai M.B. Church. Reverend Alexander founded and pastored The LaSalle Street M.B. Church, in March of 1967 in Chicago, IL. Rev. Alexander received his theological degrees from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL.
Alexander was honorably discharged in 1943, where he received numerous medal honors. During his term in the U.S. Armed Forces, he served in two World War conflicts: Philippines and New Guinea.
Rev. Alexander was united in Holy Matrimony to Carrie B. (Elam) Sercye in 1946, to this union 8 children were born. Preceding him in death was his wife Carrie, children- Patricia, Carolyn, Alton, grand-daughter Charoltte and beloved son-in-law Rev. Jesse Jackson. He later married Anna Mae Parker who preceded him in death. Rev. Alexander was the last to survive his 18 siblings.
In 1979 after his retirement from Linberg Steel Corporation he moved to Covert, Michigan where he undertook various tasks:
• 29 years Tax Consultant for IRS (Tax-Wise)
• Sercye’s Tax (Accounting & Tax service)
• Clergical Counseling
• Instrumental in the establishing of various churches in Chicago &
thru out the S.W. Michigan Area
• Honorary Member of the Ministerial Alliance
Rev. Alexander Sercye Sr. was a member of Mt. Calvary M.B. Church in Pullman, Michigan until his death.
Rev. Alexander Sercye Sr. will be sorely missed among all clerical council of the Chain Lake District.
He leaves to cherish in memories: Velecia F. (Sercye) Jackson, Melaneice Sercye, Pamela (Sercye) DeVaul, Paula M. Nelson, Alexander Sercye Jr. and Cordell Sercye and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren and great grandchildren and friends.
