Obituary of James Paul Phillips
James died peacefully on January 19, 2017, after a difficult and challenging 6 month battle with Pancreatic Cancer. He was born on April 27, 1961 in Greenwood, Mississippi to Carolyn Jean and Paul Montgomery Phillips. James spent most of his life living in Mississippi and Louisiana. He resided in Michigan in the late 80’s and early 90’s, and most recently returned in August, 2016 where he remained until his death. James also traveled the United States while working in construction with his step-father, Robert Dettman. James was a man of integrity, compassion, and respect for others. His heart for those less fortunate and struggling, those with mental illness, those with addiction and recovery will be a part of his legacy. James was a proud and passionate Democrat who faithfully stayed attuned to politic events. He loved his friends, family, recovery group, books, CNN, LSU and Saints football, spicy food, crawfish, and fine dining. James was predeceased by his father, Paul Montgomery Phillips in 1977; brother, Perry Diggs Phillips in 1990; mother, Carolyn Jean Dettman in 2013; and Step-father, Robert Dettman in 2015. He is survived by Carl and Wahweice Daves of Black Hawk, MS; several cousins; and a special friend, Cathy Franklin of Kalamazoo, MI. Cremation will take place and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Black Hawk, MS., where James will be laid to rest.
