Obituary of Denise Marie Hurley-Gipson

Some people only walk the earth for a short time. Their departure reminds us that angels are watching over us. On Friday, December 2, 2022, Denise Hurley-Gipson rejoined her heavenly family and gained her wings. She was just shy of her 65th birthday.

Born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Denise was a fierce and loving wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma, and Gi-Gi. Denise and her husband Charles Gipson celebrated almost 50 years of life together starting that epic night at Rollerworld. She was the daughter of Dennis “Red” Hurley and Mary Naoma Simms) Hurley (both of whom have preceded her in death along with a sister Sandra Leppen). She is survived by her siblings: Robert Shears, Kathy Thomas, and Carol Zahtilla; children Elrico (Mary) Hurley and Latoyia (Jamar) McCall; grandchildren: Brooklyyn Hurley, Matthew Mottor, Mariah (Mottor) Huskey, Jamar L. McCall, Kylazia (Dye) and Devyn Wilkerson, Jamez Dye, Madison Mottor, Elijah Hurley-Mottor two great-grandchildren: Cooper Payne and Esaia Wilkerson, among many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

While Denise’s family grieves her loss, they are choosing to remember Denise in a way that honors her spirit. Please join them in a Celebration of Life Ceremony. It will take place at Whitley’s Funeral Home 303 Balch St in Kalamazoo Thursday, December 15 at 12 pm. A Visitation will be available at 11:30 am that day as well. Following the funeral, there will be a procession to her final resting place, Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
