James Earl Hughes, known as “Snake” by his family and closest friends, was born in Belzoni, Mississippi to Bessie Mae and Alton Hughes. James attended Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and received his GED later in life. James was known as the “cool cat” in his youth due to his slow walking swagger and his prowess on the basketball court and at the pool table. James also had a talent and love for drawing which he shared with and taught to his youngest sister Charlotte.

James’ life wasn’t always easy, but he made it a point to laugh, hug his family, and tell them he loved them whenever he saw them. James was proceeded in death by his parents, his grandparents James Hansburg, Gertrude and John Wesley Stephens, his aunt Jammie (Tee) Stokes, and his three older brothers, Charles, Fred, and Ed Hughes.

He leaves to celebrate his life his six children, James Hughes, Eva Dixon, Francesca Dixon, Christopher Dixon, Jameika Dixon, and De’shaun Dixon, his four sisters, Altra (Lionell) Ford, Vona (Onagar) Longmire, Harriet Hughes, and Charlotte Bishop, his grandchildren, a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins.
