Obituary of Bessie Pearl Corner

Born on June 23, 1935 in Sweet Water, Alabama to Charlie and Maggie Dunning, she was the third of eleven children. In her youth, she sang with a family church group until she met Eddie Corner, Sr. The two were married on December 19, 1954, together they raised seven children. She was a loving and faithful wife for 53 years until the passing of her husband on July 26, 2008. Bessie was an industrious woman, balancing work outside of the home, and caring for her family. Once she and Eddie settled in Kalamazoo, MI, she did domestic work, and was later employed as a sweeper for Checker Motors. She also was employed by Kalamazoo Public Schools in the food service department until she retired in 1995. Bessie, known as the “cake lady”, was renowned for her cake baking. She developed a business providing cakes for many weddings and special occasions. She blessed many in the area by often providing her services free of charge. Bessie received Christ at a young age. She served faithfully at Church of God Pentecostal for over 30 years under the leadership of Bishop Lafayette W. Davis. Some of her services included singing in the choir, overseeing the kitchen, preparing communion bread and eventually she was appointed as the Church Mother. In 1996, Bessie joined the ministry of her son, Pastor Isaac King at Grace Family Worship Center. Bessie Pearl Corner departed this life on Saturday, November 26, 2016 in the presence of her loving children. She will leave to cherish her memory 7 children; Isaac (Olivia) King of Portage, MI; Greg King of Antioch, TN; DuWayne (Geraldine) Corner, Lisa (Alvin) Whitley, and Marlon (Lilly) Corner all of Kalamazoo, MI; Warren (Victoria) Corner of Phoenix, AZ; Audrey (Carl) Young of Madison Heights, MI; 20 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 4 sisters, 3 brothers and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
