Obituary of Gaynela Rochelle Spurlock

Gaynela Rochelle Spurlock Sunrise: October 1, 1967 – Sunset: December 16, 2021 Gaynela Rochelle Spurlock was born in Kalamazoo, MI on October 1, 1967 to Jimmie Spurlock, Sr. and Della Watson Spurlock-Redding. Gaynela, also affectionately known as, “Gay and Pumpkin,” was the youngest of three sons and six daughters in this union. Our newest angel received her wings on Thursday, December 16, 2021. Gaynela received Christ at a young age and was a longtime member of Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. She was also a devoted member and active supporter of her mother’s radio ministry; Nu-way Inspiration Outreach Ministry. Gaynela attended Piney Woods Boarding School in Piney Woods, MS and Gary, IN public schools where she was a 1985 Gary High School graduate. Always a courageous and adventurous person, Gaynela joined the United States Navy in 1986 following her high school graduation. She completed her Navy training in Orlando, Florida. She was classified as a Seaman Recruit and worked as a Master of Arms. On November 3, 1988, Gaynela married fellow United States Navy member, Samuel Harry Meyer in Twin Falls, Idaho. Samuel passed on September 6, 2017 and there were no children born in this union. Gaynela leaves behind to cherish her memory and mourn her absence, her devoted Mother, Elder Della Spurlock-Redding and siblings: Donald R. (Ruth M.) Watson, Kalamazoo, MI; Dorothy A. Spurlock, Canton, MI; Artelia L. Spurlock, Kalamazoo, MI; Crystal F. Spurlock-Beeks, Merrillville, IN and Bessie (Joe) Palmore, Portage, MI. She also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her father, Jimmie Spurlock, Sr.; step-father, Robert E. Redding; sisters: Mary J. Spurlock-Ware and Barbara J. Spurlock and brothers: PFC Orlando U. Spurlock, Clarence E. Spurlock, Sr., Jimmie Spurlock, Jr. and Roosevelt Spurlock. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 21, 2022. Visitation will be from 11 am to Noon, with funeral services immediately following. All services will be held at the Whitley Memorial Chapel, 330 N. Westnedge Ave, Kalamazoo Michigan. Rev. Bobette Hampton, Founder Fresh Fire AME Church officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Everest Memorial Park South Cemetery, 3941 S. Westnedge Ave, Kalamazoo, 49008. In respect of Michigan’s current COVID guidelines, there will be no repast fellowship. Gaynela will truly be missed. Her contagious smile and jubilant laughter brought us joy. She was very much loved as a Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Niece and Friend:
