Obituary of Romualdo Salas, Sr.
On Monday, December 7, 2020, Romualdo Salas, Sr., loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away at the age of 85, surrounded by family at his home in Kalamazoo.
Romualdo was born on December 5, 1935 in Mercedes, Tx. to José Maria and Mariana Salas. Romualdo worked hard, building on his family’s land in Valle Hermoso, Mx. where they grew maize and cotton. He also played Mexican minor league baseball. On December 6, 1958, he married Beatriz Alonzo. They had eight children, one daughter passed away shortly after birth. In 1969, Romualdo and his family moved to Homestead, Fl. Where he worked as a construction worker. He and his wife had three more children. In 1977, the Salas family moved to Kalamazoo, Mi. In the early 80’s he had a part in starting the church, Iglesia Del Espíritu Santo Pentecostés. He then went on to pastor at Iglesia Aposento Alto Pentecostés for most of the 90’s. He stepped down from his position as Pastor and sold his land in Mexico due to health issues. He was a member of Assembly’s of God church in Kalamazoo until his last day. Romualdo was a pillar in the church and in his family. He loved reading his Bible, sharing the word of God with others, music, singing, and baseball. His favorite team was the Detroit Tigers. He loved children and often times would give them a dollar bill, sometimes more. Romualdo was also known for his sense of humor. He knew how to make people laugh, even when they didn’t feel like laughing. He was a man of integrity; a man of his word, trustworthy, and always willing to give a lending hand without expecting anything in return. He taught his family the importance of following in the ways of the Lord, hard work, being people of integrity, love for one another, and maintaining unity in the family.
Romualdo Salas is survived by his wife, Beatriz Salas; Children Romualdo Salas, Jr. (Margaret), Blanca Salas (Mario), Rene Salas (Cristina), Ricardo Salas (Cheryl), Ronaldo Salas (Jodie), Berta Gonzales, Mariana Salas, Betty Salas, Belinda Salas, Esther Salas; 17 Grandchildren; 14 Great Grandchildren; his half brothers Eleazar Salas , Jose Salas; half sisters María Luisa Sandoval (Refugio), Armandina Gonzalez (Israel).
He was preceded in death by his father, José Maria Salas; his mother, Mariana Salas; his stepmother, Rafaela Salas; his daughter, Berta Salas; his sisters and brother- in- laws Flora and Gilberto Benavides, Esther and Dionicio Gutierrez; sister, Evangelina Alvarez; his half brother and sister-in-law, Maximino and Soledad Salas; his step sister-in-law, María Guadalupe Salas; his son-in-law, Abraham Gonzales.
